In the west, the Bhagavad Gita is generally called the Hindu Bible. The special features of this book is that the message is told in the midst of a battlefield in ancient India, but unknown to them this battle is fought every day in the lives of everybody regardless of their religious faiths.

The Bhagavad Gita is the most interpreted book in the world. It has thousands and thousands of interpretations. However, in the very first verse, Lahiri Mahasay brought this ancient message to the seeker of truth in his everyday life and into each breath. That is the unique spirit of this interpretation.

The Kriya Sutras and the author

Lahiri Mahasay's unique contribution is that he made Kriya commentaries on these five classical ancient spiritual disciplines in Bengali. We have translated them into English and added annotations and notes in difficult places.

These titles have never been available in English together in one volume, interpreted in the light of Kriya or Pranayam.

HIDDEN WISDOM

200 pp, 5 photographs and illustrations, 8 1/2 x 11, Paper, ISBN 1-877854-10-7, $20.00

This title contains extremely valuable books: for example, Manusanghita, the laws of Manu, the father of mankind. It is like the laws of Moses. Panini was an ancient yogi, considered to be the father of Sanskrit grammer, and he was even more ancient than Patanjali, who made commentaries on some of Panini's works. Japaji is the first book of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism in modern time.

16. Manusanghita

17. Yantrasar

18. Tantrasar

19. Linga Purana

20. Yogi Panini on Education

21. Japaji

INNER VICTORY

230 pp, 16 photographs and illustrations, 8 1/2 x 11, Paper, ISBN 1-877854-11-5, $20.00

This title contains the following books:

22. Sri Sri Chandi (The Divine Mother)

11. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

23. Charaka (Book of Medicine)

The worship of Goddess Durga, the Divine Mother, is the greatest festival among Hindu people. In the book there is an allegorical description of a spiritual war between the Devatas (gods) and Daityas (anti-gods). In reality, it is the battle in everybody's life between the positive and negative forces. So to win the inner battle, taking shelter of Divine Mother, worshipping Her, is the means of attaining the certificate of liberation.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the standard book of the Yoga discipline and is to some extent familar to Western readers.

The following four handwritten and published letters of Lahiri Mahasay clearly prove beyond doubt and show how deeply Lahiri Mahasay was involved in writing, printing, publishing and distributing his commentaries on 26 scriptures.

Sri Durga Saranam, “Remembering Goddess Durga, the Divine Mother.”

Namaskaranantaramidang (After Greeting),

What is the status of printing the title “Nyaya?”

[Nyaya Sutras of Yogi Gautama, is one of the six systems of Indian disciplines; it is devoted to Indian Logic].

What will be the cost of printing Taitiriya?

[Tatitriya is a famous Upanisad devoted to spiritual Education.]

How long will sending the medicines be delayed? I am asking this once to expedite the matter.

[Lahiri Mahasay permitted Panchanan Bhattacharya to produce some herbal medicines. He asked Bhattacharya to supply some. That is why he inquired about the matter in this letter.]

The copies of the title Kabir have arrived through Govinda Babu. I am writing this for your information.

Everything here is going well.

Lahiri Mahasay’s Handwritten Letter in Bengali

The English Version of the Preceding Letter.

Sri Durga Saranam
(“Remembering Goddess Durga”)

Namaskar [“Greetings”- Panchanan Bhattacharya],

“... The description of the state where there is neither ‘I’ nor ‘mine’ is the subject matter of ‘Markendeya Purana’ [Chandi, the book of Divine Mother].

“Let me know how much it will cost to print.

“It is not necessary to print the list of knowledge of the description of ‘time.’ In other words, do not print information concerning such things as the visions a person may see and how many days thereafter until he dies.

“[The above paragraph was a special instruction for the above title only].

“All the rest is fine here.”

                                                                  Sri Shyama Charan Devsarman [Lahiri]

A Published Document on a controversy

The document says, “The Bhagavad Ekadas Skanda which is on the list No. 5 was not published; therefore, it is in Guru Baba’s [Panchanan Bhattacharya’s] container. The manuscript was handwritten by Kasi Baba [Lahiri Mahasay]. Therefore, the following statement of one his disciples [Sriyukteswar] is incorrect: ‘It is wrong to say that Gurudev has written books. It belittles him. He did not write any books.’ The handwritten manuscript proves to what degree the story [statement] of the disciple is untrue.Dharmalochana O Sangit Malya - Section Iswatatvalochana - by Bodhisattva Bhattacharya, Panchanan Bhattacharya’s only son. P. 158 – Reproduced from The Divine Incarnation, page 212.

As per Lahiri Mahasay’s instruction all his disciples used to send their published books to his chief disciple, Panchanan Bhattacharya, for distribution among the Kriyanwits (Kriya practitioners). So Sriyukteswar sent his published interpretations of nine chapters of the Bhagavad Gita. However, many of Lahiri Mahasay’s disciples did not like to buy this book, as a result, Bhattacharya Mahasay had no choice but to write to Lahiri Mahasay who in turn replied, “First, let Prasad Das Goswami’s [another disciple of Lahiri Mahasay at Serampore the same town where Sriyukteswar lived] The Bhagavad Gita interpretations be distributed.” Perhaps, this created a misunderstanding on the part of Sriyukteswar that it was Bhattacharya Mahasay who did this which resulted in such an unfortunate comment before his disciples and from there it multiplied.

The English Version of the Letter

April 29 [No mention of the year]

Namaskaramantar midang [After greeting],

I have completed writing Manu [Manu Sanghita] and Siksha [Education of Yogi Panini, the ancient yogi, the father of Sanskrit Grammar]. I will send them to you for printing.

There is no need to change. Let them remain just as I have written. If varna [letter] needs correction, it should be done consulting a dictionary. …. Sending Rupees 100.00 through Money Order, please keep accounting.

Sri Nilmadhav Sarkar
The historical proof of Lahiri Mahasay’s writing of Commentaries.

The Kriyanwit disciple [Nilmadhav Sarkar]:
Your new book Sankhya Darsan is published, please send a copy to me. The enclosed stamp is for the postage.

Lahiri Mahasay’s reply:
Sent Manusanghita and Sankhya (Sankhya Darsan). Manu costs half a rupee and Sankhya is free.
[Occasionally, Lahiri Mahasay asked Panchanan Bhattacharya to send copies of different titles so he could send to Kriyanwit like Nilmadhav Sarkar. Thus Lahiri Mahasay participated in the distribution of the Kriya Books.]

In the light and context of these two handwritten letters of Lahiri Mahasay, published documents and letter, if some people say that Lahiri Mahasay did not write books, instead his disciples Panchanan Bhattacharya and Mahendranath Sanyal took notes and published them – wouldn’t these comments be baseless and unwise?
